Update note — 18 September 2026: Electoral-roll and SIR procedures can change through official notifications and revision-specific directions. Verify the current ECI and Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal instructions before acting.

An electoral-roll dispute should move through the route that matches its stage. The correct authority and form must come from current official directions, because revision-specific arrangements may change.

Important: Electoral-roll procedures can change through notifications and revision-specific directions. Verify the current form, authority and time requirement on official portals. This is general legal information, not advice for an individual voter.

Stage 1: verify the operative roll

Search the official roll and record the constituency, part and serial information. Compare earlier entries and identify whether the issue is absence, incorrect particulars, shifting, objection or a formal deletion order.

Stage 2: use the appropriate application

Use the current ECI form description and instructions. Submit relevant evidence, keep an acknowledgement and participate in any verification or hearing.

Stage 3: obtain the decision

A status message is not always a reasoned order. Preserve the written decision, relied-upon grounds and evidence submitted. Verify whether an allowed application has actually been reflected in the roll.

Stage 4: assess the appeal

Section 24 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 provides for appeals, but the competent authority and procedure must be checked against current law and notifications. Do not assume every revision uses the same forum or label.

Stage 5: consider further review

After examining statutory remedies, judicial review may be considered for a qualifying public-law issue. The High Court route is not automatic, and disputed facts or an incomplete record can affect maintainability and relief.

Stage 6: verify implementation

After any favourable decision, check the operative roll and retain evidence. If implementation is incomplete, address that specific failure rather than restarting the entire merits dispute.

Frequently asked questions

Can stages be skipped?

Sometimes urgency or exceptional facts may affect the route, but skipping an available remedy requires careful legal assessment.

Is every missing name an SIR deletion?

No. Verify the current roll and record before assigning a cause.

When is the process complete?

Only after the relevant decision is implemented and the operative roll status is verified.

What record should be kept at each stage?

Keep roll extracts, applications, acknowledgements, notices, hearing material, orders, appeal papers and proof of any implementation request.

Can the High Court route be decided from a portal screenshot alone?

Usually no. The written order, statutory remedy, current official direction and complete procedural history should be reviewed before choosing a route.

Can the consultation begin remotely?

Initial review can often begin remotely with scanned records, but filing, verification, affidavits or hearings may require local representation or personal steps.
